Hallux valgus, better known as a bunion, is the outward deviation of the big toe. The first symptoms of hallux valgus are redness and pain in the area of the bunion due to excessive pressure and friction against the shoe. Sometimes the deformity is such that the big toe overlaps the neighboring toe or vice versa. Hallux valgus, which is sometimes just ugly, can cause disabling foot pain, have difficulty putting on shoes and even at risk of falling.
